Maximum system, then deliberate release
Lights in the Sky / Wave Goodbye
July 19, 2008 – September 10, 2009
Lights in the Sky and Wave Goodbye form one connected profile with two sharply different live systems. The 2008 production surrounded the band with reactive screens and tightly cued imagery. The 2009 farewell run removed much of that machinery so repertoire, guests, and room-scale intensity could change from night to night.

The Live Profile
Touring lineup
- Lights in the Sky: Trent Reznor, Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Freese, Justin Meldal-Johnsen
- Wave Goodbye: Trent Reznor, Robin Finck, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Ilan Rubin
Stage and lighting
- Lights in the Sky joined Rob Sheridan, Roy Bennett, and Moment Factory around stealth screens, interactive imagery, live cameras, and the touch-controlled Echoplex sequence.
- The scale and precision of the 2008 system encouraged a comparatively stable set structure.
- Wave Goodbye removed most of the proprietary machinery, restoring freedom for longer sets, rotating songs, guests, and complete-album presentations.
Setlist patterns
- Lights in the Sky used a production-cued main set, a rotating Ghosts I–IV suite ending in a reworked Piggy, and In This Twilight with a Zero-Sum instrumental tag as the closing sequence.
- NIN/JA and later Wave Goodbye dates rotated broadly; March of the Pigs and Head Like a Hole were the principal constant anchors.
- The final North American shows expanded into unusually long sets and complete performances of The Downward Spiral.
Support acts and co-bills
- Boris, The Bug, Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, HEALTH, A Place to Bury Strangers, Alec Empire, The Horrors, Mew, and Street Sweeper Social Club appeared across the two years.
- Jane's Addiction is classified as a co-bill relationship during NIN/JA rather than as an opening act.
