Hesitation Marks

United States release September 3, 2013

Hesitation Marks was the first full-length Nine Inch Nails album in five years and grew from a year of work Trent Reznor initially kept private. Developed with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder, it revisits familiar subjects through spare arrangements, electronic grooves, and a more measured vocal performance.

The title and Russell Mills artwork deliberately echo The Downward Spiral, but the music examines survival and identity from the other side of that earlier record's collapse. Led by “Came Back Haunted,” the album moves between clipped rhythm, low-frequency weight, moments of brightness, and dense detail hidden beneath an unusually restrained surface.

About the Release Recording, artwork, and release history

Return and reconstruction

The release reopens Nine Inch Nails after the Wave Goodbye period and frames recovery, identity and control through a deliberately reduced electronic surface.

Artwork as parallel record

Russell Mills developed an extensive body of work around chaos, order, control and surrender; only part of that body appears in ordinary packaging.

Tour translation

The album moved through the 2013 festival band, the expanded Tension ensemble and smaller 2014 configurations, producing several distinct live arrangements.
