Pretty Hate Machine

United States release October 20, 1989

Pretty Hate Machine is the debut Nine Inch Nails album and the foundation of the Halo catalog. Its combination of sequenced electronics, distorted percussion, pop structure, and emotional isolation established a vocabulary the project would repeatedly dismantle and rebuild.

Songs including “Head Like a Hole,” “Down in It,” and “Sin” carried the record beyond its underground origins. Its commercial reach brought late-eighties industrial production into the alternative mainstream that followed.
