Down in It

United States release September 15, 1989

Down in It is the first official Nine Inch Nails single and the opening entry in the Halo sequence. Issued before Pretty Hate Machine, it introduced Trent Reznor's fusion of programmed rhythm, synth texture, and sharply personal writing.

The release expands the album version through the “Skin,” “Shred,” and “Singe” mixes, with Adrian Sherwood and Keith LeBlanc helping push the track toward dub, industrial dance, and reconstruction.
