The Perfect Drug

Mark Romanek’s 1997 video for “The Perfect Drug” draws on Edward Gorey, Victorian mourning imagery, and elaborate studio sets. Reznor appears as a man grieving a child while retreating into absinthe and fantasy. Costumes, mechanical birds, formal gardens, and saturated color distinguish it from the more industrial settings used in many earlier Nine Inch Nails videos.
