Broken

United States release September 22, 1992

Broken is the EP that violently redrew the boundaries of Nine Inch Nails after Pretty Hate Machine. Dense guitars, punishing drum programming, and compressed arrangements replaced much of the debut's sleek synth-pop surface.

“Wish,” “Happiness In Slavery,” and “Gave Up” became central works, while the unusual packaging of early pressings and hidden placement of “Physical” and “Suck” reinforced the release's confrontational identity.
